Sorry to delve into the Bill Lawry book of cricket cliches but it was all happening at the GABBA today. After all the months of build up, talk of legacies, momentum and who would compromise both sides it was here. England won the toss and opted to bat but it all went down from there, captain Andrew Strauss caught by Hussey of the third ball in the first over.
Highlights of course included:
- Peter Siddle repaying the selectors faith in tenfold, taking six wickets for 54 including a dictionary hat-trick (He had rung the Bell Prior to snagging the Broad) also could of had seven alas for a Haddin dropped catch
- Xavier Doherty taking two wickets to mop up the innings and open his test cricket career, also had a great exchange with Kevin Pietersen where he mimed to throw the ball and proceeded to after the next delivery.
- Alastair Cook being the rock for the English innings, re-read to yourself Alastair Cook, the mascara wearing opener battling his way to 67, only assisted by Ian Bell making 76 with continuing his great form
- Kevin Pietersen being greeted onto the GABBA with a chorus of boos, music to the ears.
- Graeame Swann being hit for two consectutive boundaries by Simon “the Krab” Katich and hopefully signals more for day 2.
England were bowled out for 260, with Siddle taking a bagful. Australia managed to navigate the tricky thirty minute period before the end of play to end up 0/25 and more the same hopefully tomorrow.
