Well to say these last two days have been a disappointment would be an understatement but it’s not looking good for Australia at the moment, they were skittled for 98, the lowest total at the MCG by Australia since our first test in the 1870s! England showed that the pitch wasn’t a minefield when they were 0/157 at stumps on day one and continued their dominance on day 2 piling on the runs to finish 346 runs in front.
Where to from here for Australia? It seems that Perth was more an aboration than being a guide to Australia’s performance but I don’t think the blame can be put squarely on the bowlers like it has most Ashes, it’s the batsmen who have to have to shoulder the blame, 98 all out is nothing a grade or state team would be disgraced to be skittled for, let alone a professional team.
Their starts haven’t been amazing or even good, with the lowest ebb being 2/3 at Adelaide but still being in the series has mased these horrid performances but no on the brink of losing the ashes due in part to these horrible starts it’s come to light. Phillip Hughes, I love the guy but he has had a horrible year for New South Wales and shouldn’t of been selected.
Ponting and Clarke both seem to trying too hard to get the score which brings them some form but both should take a leaf from Mike Hussey’s book and come out playing their natural game, also leaving a lot while they settle then making up for it later. These have served both Hussey and Watson well when they’ve had prolonged stays at the crease but we can’t keep depending on these two plus Haddin to score all our runs, everyone needs to contribute if we’re going to save the test plus moving Smith below Haddin in the batting order would help and ease the pressure on Smith..
Looking ahead to Sydney, if Australia go onto lose the Boxing Day test, they should maybe blood Khawaja since it’s a lost cause also send an SOS call to Nathan Hauritz to restore some pride and maybe finish the Ashes level but thats next week, come on Australia save the game please.
